Text from Alex Young: I’m here.

Come in, Dylan replied quickly. He pulled on his blanket, trying to cover his bulky cast. The cast made it really difficult to walk, so he'd spent the last few weeks on the recliner, but the truth was he could never get comfortable. A second later, he heard the door slam and Alex walked into the room. Dylan put down his phone and tried to smile up at his friend.

Alex just shook his head and handed him a binder full of papers. “Here’s your assignments. Dude, when are you coming back to school? Mr. Baker asks so many questions every single day. I don’t know what to say to him.”

Dylan just shrugged. “He’s such a drag. Tell him as soon as this cast comes off, I’ll come dance for him,” he chuckled.

“He’ll take you seriously,” Alex shook his head and plopped down on the couch. He glanced up at the TV, which was playing some stupid Disney Channel show.

“I almost would really do it, if it meant my leg wasn’t so messed up. You think missing school would be fun, but it gets old really fast.”

Alex frowned, sympathetic. “Yeah, I remember once in fourth grade I had the flu, it was terrible.”

“It was so stupid to try that skateboard trick… I got it half-right but I paid for it all the way.”

“Yeah, you really had it until the landing.”

Dylan just flinched. “Dude, don’t remind me.”

“Sorry,” Alex muttered quickly. “Anyway, I better go start on my own homework. Sometimes I think it’s like they’re trying to kill us.” He stood up and looked down at Dylan again. “Oh, maybe I shouldn’t tell you, but the seventh grade dance is next week.”

Dylan smirked. “I don’t care, I’d never go to one of those lame dances,” he lied. “But you should go. Dude, you should totally ask Christy to go.”

“Are you kidding me? She won’t even look at me.”

“Trust me, that means she likes you. Just be yourself and you’ll be fine.”

Alex nodded, trying to be confident. “Maybe you’re right.”

“I always am,” Dylan just smiled.

“I don’t know, I guess I might try. I’ll let you know what happens, if anything.” Alex just shook his head and left.
