Summary: Marion decides to leave the only home she's ever known, causing problems on both sides of the fence.

Marion Hall and Iris Benton have grown up together always being told that their tiny colony was the greatest and safest place to live. They believed it too, always seeing the airplanes flying overhead and hearing loud machines on the other side of the tall concrete wall. Despite the warnings, Marion has always wanted to see the world and she finally convinces her friend Sebastian Moore to leave the colony with her. Iris refuses to follow, she’s too afraid to try to escape and leave everything she knows, including her younger brother Nick, who cannot leave. The friends promise to keep each other updated and tearfully part ways. Soon after Marion, Sebastian and a small group of travelers escape, they realize they have made a huge mistake. People on the outside immediately realize the group is from the colony and view them as outcasts… unwanted and even dangerous. The travelers always thought the colony existed to protect them from the world, but they quickly realize the colony was actually to keep them away from the world. Marion sends a message to Iris to tell her they are thinking of returning. The group’s only hesitation is something they have never experienced before, something the locals call music. Meanwhile back in the colony, the group’s departure has sparked an uprising. The carefully designed society is quickly starting to deteriorate. Iris manages to get a message to Marion before it is too late, warning her not to return. The only question remaining is if there is anywhere safe left to go.
