Summary: Helen loves all her kids and there's always room for one more.
I looked around our living room and had to smile. It seemed like there were kids perched on every surface. Al was stretched out, hogging the recliner while Gwen and Phoebe were fighting for room on the couch. Stella was sitting on the far edge of the couch, probably wishing that her older sisters would move over and make room for her. Little Samson was too busy playing with his truck on the floor to notice much of anything. And my husband Robert was standing in the corner, his arms crossed, watching everything.
“OK, guys, I have an announcement,” I said. I was still smiling, even though I was kind of dreading their reactions, especially from Al. At 13, with long shaggy hair, braces and brand name sneakers, Al thought he knew everything. Gwen and Phoebe were both 10, and they really were brilliant, always amazing me with how much they knew. Stella was 6 and Samson was 4 and they were both stubborn, spoiled and used to getting their way.
“Well…” Al looked up at me. “What is it?”
"I'm pregnant!"
They were silent for a long moment. Finally Al spoke up. "You're kidding."
I just shook my head. "Nope. You guys are gonna have a little brother. We just went to the doctor yesterday." I looked up at James and smiled. We had wanted a large family, but I never imagined this. Of course every child had their own challenges. Sometimes it seemed impossible. We had five of everything, something for each kid, but it was never enough. We had talked about it a lot and decided there was room for one more. The baby would bring more love, more personality to our family.
Of course the kids were speechless. All they could do is sit and stare.
“You guys know that I love all of you. Having a little brother isn’t going to change anything. We’ll just have to shift everything around and share a little more.” I winked at my husband, but the kids still didn’t seem very happy about any of this.
I knew they would get used to it and make room for little Neil. There was more than enough love to go around.
