A spider web caught at her face, a sign that no one had been there yet. Bay wiped her hand over her face, trying to clear her vision. She should have known this place would be a mess. She looked around the dark entryway and even though she knew it was deserted, she said, “Hello?”

There was no answer. Bay held her camera carefully in one hand. She knew she couldn’t get any pictures in here, it was just too dark. Still, she took in the intricate wrought iron railings, the dark wood floors and took a few more steps inside. The house was beautiful, she couldn’t understand how this place had stood empty for so many years. Bay passed the Victorian mansion every single day on her way to school and she’d been meaning to come explore for a while. She had been meaning to practice photography more but it seemed like she wasn't going to get a chance in the dark house.

Suddenly, she heard a loud creak. She froze. "Who's there?"

Still no answer. She looked around carefully, hoping the house really was empty. She told herself she didn't believe in ghosts, but a lot of weird stuff had happened in her life. She had to be ready for anything. Bay stood still, just listening. There was the noise again... She turned and caught sight of a slim figure. She took a step towards him. He was facing away from her, studying a dusty painting. “Hey you. What are you doing here?”

No answer. She walked up to him and tapped him on the shoulder. Finally, he turned around and raised his eyebrows at her. He didn’t seem surprised to see her there. “Who are you?” she asked, looking up at the young man. He looked to be about her age, maybe about to graduate high school.

He just shook his head and made a motion like he was taking pictures. He even pointed to the camera at his side.

Bay just shook her head. “I don’t understand.”

The boy held up a finger and pulled out his phone. He quickly typed something and held it up her for her to see. I’m taking pictures. You shouldn't be here. He shook his head. He sure was blunt, but suddenly, Bay thought she understood.

“Are you… deaf?”

He nodded.

“But you can understand me?”

He nodded again. Soon, he was typing on the phone again. I can read lips. Anyway, you left the door wide open. Anybody could have walked in here.

Bay was a little annoyed that this guy that she didn’t even know was telling her to be careful. “I'm ok. I can take care of myself.”

He didn't look convinced. He took back his phone and started typing again. Oddly enough, this wasn’t as awkward as it could be. It seemed like this guy could read her perfectly. It seems like neither of us are going to get any pictures in here. What do you say? I'll buy you dinner.

Bay had to smile despite herself. Was he really flirting with her? He didn’t even know her, but somehow, it made sense. He looked at her like he knew what she was thinking… What was she thinking? She was with Tank now, right? He was a nice guy. But this guy in front of her was something else… She shook her head, trying to clear the cobwebs in her mind. “Umm, thanks for the offer. I should really get home. My mom and dad will worry if I'm not home by dark.” It was a lie. They didn’t really seem to care, especially after the DNA tests had come back that she wasn’t even related to them. They had never found any leads on that… It seemed the girl that she’d been switched with had simply disappeared.

The boy studied her for a moment too long. His eyes seemed to be boring into her soul. It was too much. She was supposed to be in love with Tank.

But the way this guy was staring at her was insane. It was like he was only person who really understood her. It was crazy. She didn’t even know his name… They didn't even communicate in the same language, but it seemed like everything just made sense with him. "You know what? It’s OK. I can go to dinner. " She had spoken it aloud, but she knew they both understood what was really happening.
