Summary: Bay meets Artie in an interesting location.
"You're kidding me!" Bay looked up at the guy arguing with a counselor in the corner. The whole room was basically one office, with little cubicles giving people the sense that their private matters didn't really matter at all.
A motivational poster hanging above them caught her eye. It showed a guy climbing a mountain and said, "anything is possible." She wondered what that doing here in the Center for Student Disability Services, of all places.
The guy backed away from the desk and started pushing his wheelchair towards the door. He caught Bay's eye, who was still staring at the wall behind him. "Excuse me," He accused, rolling his eyes.
"Oh, I'm sorry," she shook her head.
"You know, where I come from, it's considered rude to stare at people." He seemed upset, but she thought he was being overly dramatic.
"I wasn't. I was looking at that poster. It seems insensitive."
He followed her gaze to the wall. He turned back to her and smirked. "Wow, that's pretty low." He shook his head and studied her for a moment. "Sorry, I'm just annoyed. Do you go here?"
"Yeah, but I'm only a freshman."
"It's OK. Maybe you could help me with something... I have to go, but here, what's your name?" He has pulled out his phone and was getting ready to enter her info.
"Bay." Was this guy actually asking for her number?
"My name is Artie," he was really smiling now.
Bay decided it couldn't hurt to give her number to him, least of all because she needed to meet more people. She quickly recited her cell number.
"OK, maybe we can meet for coffee or something."
"Yeah, sure," she smiled, watching him put away his stuff. He gave her a quick wave and left the office.
"Bay Kennish?"
She looked up at the receptionist who had called her name. "Yes?"
"You can go speak to George now," she nodded over to the office where Artie had been.
She got up, still thinking about Artie. He was kind of cute, in a nerdy way... It was probably nothing, she thought, he's just trying to be nice.
She went over to the office in the corner and looked down at the middle aged man. He was wearing a floral Hawaiian shirt and khakis, he looked like he was having a midlife crisis. "Please sit down," he smiled a little.
She hesitated, it would be admitting her weakness. She sighed, she was already here... She might as well go through with it, it would be a huge help. She sat down slowly. "I need someone to help me take notes. I have a note from my doctor... I don't know what else you need."
"Don't worry. That's what we're here for." That sweet smile stayed on his face. No wonder Artie had gotten mad at him.
