Summary: Bay meets Artie for coffee.
I walk up the step little ramp leading up to the Starbucks just outside of the campus. I’m freezing in my t shirt. The temperature has dropped drastically in the past few days, but I guess I’m just being stubborn. I would miss the summer. I look down and see a penny. I know it’s stupid, but I always pick up pennies on the street. This one looks shiny and new as I bend to pick it up. I glance at the year, It’s from 1992, my birth year. Where has it been for the past 18 years, if not out in the world? I decide it will be my lucky penny, at least for today.
I walk inside the Starbucks and over to the counter. There’s no line. The cashier looks up at me. “I’ll have a tall vanilla latte.” I don’t know all the fancy drinks and I don’t have patience to learn.
I pay and give the cashier my name. I look around the empty Starbucks and spot Artie in the back corner. He’s in front of a laptop, but he’s been looking past it the whole time I’ve been in the store. I give him a little wave and he just smiles at me. It doesn’t take very look for the barista to make my drink. As she hands it to me, she just smiles, “You have a cool name.”
“Thanks,” I hate my name, but I just nod. I walk over to Artie and sit down across from him. He’s still got the laptop open. “Hey.”
“Hey, I hope it’s ok I already finished my coffee.” He holds up an empty cup, looking down at the laptop screen.
“Wow, how long have you been here?”
He just shrugs. “I’m working on something.”
“Oh,” I pause. “I didn’t even ask you, maybe we’re in some of the same classes.”
He finally looks up and closes the laptop. “I don’t go to Pratt. I go to the Brooklyn Film Academy. That’s actually my problem right now.”
“Oh, huh, you’re a film student?”
“What?” He glared at me. “You don’t think I could do it? Apparently Pratt doesn’t think so either.”
“No, it’s not that,” I shake my head. “I’m in the film program here and everyone seems so stuck up and fake. It’s not what I expected. I know I just met you, but you seem like a really nice guy.”
“Oh, OK, thanks,” He says quietly. “Well, I’m emotionally unavailable. I mean, I have a girlfriend.”
I just stare at him for a long moment. I hadn’t even been asking that. Finally, I just shake my head. “What do you mean, Pratt doesn’t think you can be a film student?”
He sighs, “I’m taking a class on Pratt’s campus, because BFA doesn’t offer it. They promised me they’d have a tech assistant who could help me out, but now they’re saying no because I’m not a student here.”
“Wow, that’s awful.”
“Yeah, you’re telling me. So look, I’m just gonna cut to the chase. I really need to take this class. I need someone who could hang up some posters for me, so I can find an assistant. It has to be an inside job. I don’t have access to the dorms or the student lounge or anywhere people hang out.”
“So you were wondering if I could help you out?”
“Well, would you?” He shoots me a winning smile.
There’s no way I can say no to him. “Alright.”
He actually digs into his bag and hands me a stack of photocopies, like he already knew I would say yes. I guess he was right. I just sigh, this guy intrigues me. I’ll have to figure out a way to talk to him more.
