Summary: Mike and Kate get a glimpse of the elusive Chelagon.

The Chelagon (kee-la-gon) prefer to live in rocky caves overlooking the sea, but they will also burrow on sand or mud in remote ocean locations. The fearful creature is huge; a man standing next to the Chelagon would not even reach the top of its leg. Luckily for that man, the Chelagon prefer to eat algae, fungi, shellfish and an occasional fish. They will not attack a human unless provoked. The Chelagon has a thick light brown exoskeleton and huge crab-like claws. The creature’s most imposing feature is its oversized pair of wings, which almost look majestic when they are spread open in flight. The Chelagon depend on their wings, as well as a lot of speed and agility, for the majority of their travel. Their short legs cannot travel very far by land. The Chelagon have huge black eyes that can spot their prey from far distances while gliding over the water. The Chelagon are very unforgiving and will fight to the death to defend themselves, their offspring and their resting places.

“Hey, are you sure we’re going the right way?” I shouted up ahead at Mike.

Mike barely looked back at me. He just smirked and nodded. “Of course we are. This has to be the right path. The beach should be getting close now. Besides, my phone doesn’t lie.”

He held up his phone, the latest model. He was right, it had an advanced GPS that was so accurate it was practically impossible to get lost. I had to smile at him. “Alright. I guess we’ll go over that hill and stop for lunch. Maybe I’m not as in good shape as you are, but I’m getting tired.”

“Alright, just a quick break. I can’t wait to jump in.” He turned back and practically started running up the hill.

Mike reached the top of the hill and he suddenly stopped. “What is it?” I yelled up at him. “Are people on the beach after all? You think they wouldn’t bother to walk so far.”

“Shh, Kate,” he waved back at me. I hurried up the hill, looking more at him than at the beach ahead. He was staring. “I’ve heard about them, but I didn’t think they really existed.”

“You didn’t think what existed?” But suddenly, I caught sight of what he was talking about. I gasped.

There a giant dragon resting on the beach. It turned slightly and I realized it wasn’t a dragon. It had giant claws and I knew it was an elusive Chelagon. I don’t think it's ever been photographed before, but I even didn’t think of raising my phone. I was too busy staring at it.

The beach around the Chelagon was a mess, like something had recently disturbed it. There were bits of eggs and guts all around. It wasn’t too hard to figure out what had happened. Something or someone had attacked the Chelagon.

I stared at the beach, what could have had enough force to cause such destruction? I realized the creature was trying to move. It was trying to open its huge wings, but it couldn’t get the strength to unfurl them so that it could fly… I had read enough about the Chelagon to know what that meant.

If the Chelagon couldn’t fly, it couldn’t move. If it couldn’t move, it couldn’t get food.

“It’s gonna die,” I whispered to Mike. “We have to help it.”

Mike just sighed. “What can we do? It’s like five times bigger than us. It’ll kill us if we touch it, even if it’s dying itself.”

“It’s so sad. Let’s get out of here.”

“No, wait,” he held my hand for a moment. “This is too crazy. I can’t believe someone would just attack it.”

I just shook my head. “Come on, Mike. You’re right, there’s nothing we can do.”

We walked away silently, hand in hand. We never told anyone about the dying Chelagon.
