Summary: Artie's reason for missing Rachel's opening night was pathetic, but he didn't lie.
“I have a problem.”
“Are you infected again?”
“No! Just listen. I made a pact back in June, right before graduation. I knew I would see most of my friends again, but what about the ones still in high school? I tried not to think too much about it, but I would miss them, even if the rest of my friends didn't really seem to care. I didn’t think I would have time during Thanksgiving or Christmas break to see them much. So we made a plan. Even though my own spring break was in March, I would save my money and suntan lotion until the second week of April and vacation with them. I know what you're thinking, but I could miss a few days of class just fine. I didn't tell anyone else my plans.
“We confirmed everything really early and booked non-refundable tickets to get the best deals. You know I’m always careful with my money, but it goes fast when you're taking a vacation. I spent a lot of money, but I figured it would be a once in a lifetime trip. I would have to stay in touch via Facebook and Skype for the rest of time.
“Anyway, I didn't really pay attention when Rachel announced the opening night of Funny Girl. It seemed so far away and of course I would attend. But now that it’s getting closer, it’s the only thing she can talk about. I remembered slowly, than all at once. It’s the same week I’ll be in Florida.
“I can’t cancel my trip, trust me, I tried. I almost used the disabled get out of jail free card, but I can't bring myself to try it. I don’t know. What should I do?”
“You have to go if you spent that much money. Just try to enjoy yourself.”
“And miss Rachel’s opening night? She’ll never forgive me.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it. It won’t be a lie, exactly.”
Artie’s feeling uncharacteristically shy, but here’s some big news:
He’s going to the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival!
Artie was embarrassed his mom posted on facebook for him, but she was right. She never said his film was accepted, people just assumed that it was. She bought him a ticket to the film festival out of the kindness of her heart.
He tried to enjoy himself on spring break, but he could not.
