I didn’t care that Heather was laughing at me. “You’re taking pictures of the ducks,” she chuckled.

I just shrugged and kept pointing my DSLR at the water. “You never know when you might get a good shot.”

“Yeah, but there are so many exotic animals here. Can’t you get a better picture of a tiger in a cage or a bird in the aviary or something like that?”

She didn’t understand photography and I could never quite explain it all to her. Instead I just sighed. “It doesn’t really work like that. Let me just have my creative outlets, OK?”

“OK, whatever you want…” she shook her head, not really getting it. She stared out at the ducks for a moment and quickly got bored. “I’m going over to the peacocks. They’re just on the other side of the pond.”

“Wait, wait,” I waved a hand at her, trying to concentrate while I focused on one last shot. I snapped the picture and I was finally satisfied. “OK, let’s go. I think I got what I wanted.”

“So you’re finally ready to move onto something more exciting?”

I nodded. The only reason I had agreed to spend a day at the zoo with her was because the place was free, and I thought it might make a good casual date. I knew the relationship wouldn’t last, but she was fun to hang out with in the meantime. I took her hand. There was another positive thing about today that I hadn’t counted on. I knew that picture of baby ducklings splashing the water would turn out great, but heck if Heather would understand.
