Summary: Artie moves to LA. A(nother) series of fics based on the "Fingertips" suite by TMBG.
You can almost feel the static charge in your fingers as you dial on your old touch screen. These phones have mostly gone out of style, but you can't afford a new model. You're not surprised when you hear her shrill voicemail. "Hey Rachel," you say to the machine. "I was wondering if we could discuss something."
You don't expect a call back for hours, so you get settled on your bed in the hotel. She's probably taping her TV show. It's been such a success, beyond everyone's wildest imagination. You hear they're talking about making a movie. You don't even think of asking Rachel if she has any connections to help you out. You just want a place to stay out in LA. You've been avoiding going out there because you really don't want to live in LA, but you're out of options. You'll have to make do.
To your surprise, she calls you back in less than half an hour. "Hey Artie." It's almost a relief to hear her familiar voice. You've been pitching your script to strangers for so long and you miss talking to someone familiar. All of your friends are busy with their real jobs. You have no girlfriend to speak of, but it's just as well.
"Hey," you know you sound tired.
"How are you? What's going on?" How could you have forgotten her hurried voice? She probably has a million other things to do right now.
"I'm ok," you say carefully. Suddenly, you regret making this call. You don't want to dump all your problems on someone else.
"What did you want to talk about? Sorry, I only have a few minutes between takes."
"I'm thinking of moving to LA." You blurt out. You have nothing to lose at this point.
"That's great!" You wonder if that's real excitement that you hear. It's hard to tell.
"I was wondering... Do you know somewhere I could stay, just for a little while? You know how it is. You gotta come out to LA before you can even look for work."
"Yeah, sure, of course. I have a study that I never use. I could get an air mattress or something."
You cringe. This is not your ideal living situation at all. You're not even sure you can get down onto an air mattress. You're saying "OK" before you can reconsider. You have to remember you have no other choice right now. You really don't want to move back home.
