What on earth made him make such a negative statement about a movie that was still in theaters worldwide and on the verge of a DVD release? Did he ever like the movie in the first place?

It's just really bizarre. I can understand being disappointed by the film's performance, but it did get some great reviews and had many good points, and was certainly far from the worst thing to come out this summer.

I can't help but wonder if we're going to get an "I was misquoted!" report soon.

That's shocking. Really shocking. It's bad press on a movie that was, in all actuality, still considered really good. And I'm not being biased, here; it has its issues, but it's still good.

And yeah, what an idiotic thing to say on the verge of the DVD sales!

Yep - if it had been phrased as "okay, Cowboys & Aliens could have been better and we've learned some lessons from that" it would be far more acceptable.

I have to wonder what Favreau / the actors / producers / SFX crews think of this.
