A bird died on top of my car. sophiaserpentia noticed it. Clearly it had been there for a few days. We drove home from the supermarket and it was still there

Sometimes? Often nature isn't so pretty. For wild thangs, life is "short, nasty, and brutish." Eat or be eaten, kill or be killed. If the natural predators don't get you, the unnatural ones -- cars, pollution, poison in the environment and the water, humans -- will.

But yeh, it's really upsetting to be reminded of it so graphically and in your face. :-

Those wormy things were almost certainly maggots. Yeah, gross, but *shrug* it's a part of life/death.

Definitely maggots. They're an important part if the ecosystem. But they're still yukky. :-)

I found a dead opossum behind the planter next to the steps leading to the front door of my building last summer. Freaked the hell out of me, but someone told me it was a good sign somehow; death brings new life. YMMV.
