Carrot tops

Oct 08, 2007 10:18

I bought a bunch of carrots at a farmer's market that had the green stems attached (you never see that at a supermarket!) I understand the carrot tops are edible but don't know what to do with them. Have any of you found a use for carrot tops ( Read more... )

My Winnie the Pooh cook book tells me I can make a carrot top tea out of it. Wash and shake dry. Put into big teapot. Cover with boiling water. Let steep. Drink a light, non-caffinated greens tea.

every recipe i could find in my cookbooks was for soup.

btw, the grocery stores around me do sell carrots (both organic and not) with the greens still attached as well as the plastic bag carrots. methinks you need a better grocery store!

It's likely some of the stores have them and I just haven't been paying attention! :-)

'nother thought on the subject: what about the harvest in central square?
not sure how far that is for you, but definitely on the T! and nice, nice veggies usually.

Good idea! I go through Central Square on my way home from work anyway...

It's a strong carrot flavor, but a little of the greens in a salad is nice. If you make your own soup stock, I imagine it could be used in that. For quality year-round produce, I recommend Busa Farms or Wilson Farms. Very little, if any, will be local in the depth of a New England winter, but they have better quality consistently year-round, compared to the mainstream markets. Of course there's also Bread & Wallet....

Yes, I was thinking I'd check out Wilson Farms after farmer's market season is over. Thanks for the reminder about Busa Farms. And I know there's another place in Arlington Heights (a new place, just opened in the past few months) that tries to get local produce when it's available.

Sorry I've never cooked carrot tops or beet greens. I'm not a big gteen vegetable fan. Let me know how the recipes come out:-)

Ok. :) I doubt I'll do anything with the carrot tops since they're getting a bit old, but I'm definitely going to try those beet greens. :)
