say you apply for a job, govt or private.

u read about it somewhere. and u send ur particulars in.

if u are not shortlisted for some reason.

do u hear from the organization? do they like reply? telling you that you were rejected?

or do they like just leave the applicant hanging?

it depends..
some will leave u hanging...and dun reply..
but generally most will still tell u even if u are rejected..

on the recruitment ad there will be some statement like "only shortlisted applicants will be notified." which means don't call us we'll call you.

as aeron says the more polite companies will send you a short thanks but no thanks note. but if you consider that some HR ppl have to deal with 1,000s of applicants then replying to rejected applicants will not be a huge priority.

highly likely will not reply to applicants whose resume is not selected for interview or even a first "chat" as it is impractical to email every one who sent in their resume that they are not selected

i doubt any company will have the manpower to handle "rejection" replies from this kinda source, i.e newspaper/online ads

otherwise, if they called you or you have your interview, it is common courtesy to inform you ASAP about the results
