Elevator Conversation: How much is too much?

 Today I got in the elevator of my 18-floor apartment building as I do everyday and rode in complete silence with 2 complete strangers. It was so awkward! You could tell everyone was checking each other out and make conclusions about where someone was coming from and what they were doing. One man was carrying a woman's purse but the woman standing

I understand the awkwardness of neighbors who won't talk to you...one time I held the front door open for a neighbor and said "Good morning" and he didn't even look at me! Most of my other interactions with my neighbors have been pretty similar. Oh well :-P
