People have been "making" ligers for awhile... About 2 years ago there was a segment, on that animal police on Animal Planet, on a "zoo" breeding tigers and lions, and of course they were all put down, and the "makers" arrested, at least, that's what I was led to believe. Now scientists are making them? That seems... hypocritical?

Any idea on why they are doing this?

People have been forcing out Ligers and Tigons for a long time. It is illegal to purposely breed them. Occasionally in a sanctuary setting were lions and tigers mix somewhat peacefully these things will happen. I am brought to beleive that the people holding this animal and many other illegal exotic cats were experimenting on them.

They could be doing it for a lot of reasons, most of the time Ligers and Tigons are bred as "pets" to boost egos. They are seen as a trophy pet.

These people could be experimenting on them for a lot of reasons. It is wrong. They also could be trying to breed a super cat, ya know?

Anyway. it's fucked up. The cat is a creation of mankind, and when it acted according to it's natural instinct to roam it was killed. It makes me sad.
