Physics is Phun phor Spring Break, too!

Yes, folks, it's that time again. This Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings (March 12-14) we're having a Physics is Phun show at UMD. The topic is Energy and Motion.

Physics is Phun is U-MD's series of public outreach shows on physics. A few times a year, we do a show, repeated for three nights, on a particular topic in physics. They're aimed at roughly a high school level audience, but anyone can get something out of them- we routinely get folks in the audience ranging from mid elementary school to their mid-eighties, at least.

If you're interested in seeing the show, it's at 7:00 each of the three evenings in the UMD Physics Building's main lecture halls (rooms 1410 and 1412, combined into one for the evening). At 7:00 we begin with some hands-on demonstrations for the audience to wander around and look at or play with. At 7:30, we begin the more formal lecture-and-demonstration presentation, which lasts for an hour or so.

Also, we're hunting for a few volunteers to help with the show. What we need are people to be extra assistants for the hands-on preshow, to help demonstrate things to the audience as they come in. You don't need a lot of knowledge of physics, just curiosity and a willingness to play with toys. Volunteers gather an hour or so before the show for pizza, and then our fearless leader (Dr. Berg) shows off the evening's toys and each volunteer picks one to learn to use and demonstrate. It's really quite painless.

If you're interested in volunteering, contact the Physics student services office at 301-405-7935 to sign up (this is important, so we know how much pizza to order), then come down to Physics Room 0402 (behind the lecture halls) around 6:00 or a little before.

The demonstrations this time include potatoes, eggs, lead bricks, and the infamous Rocket Tricycle.

Hope to see some of you!
