Yeah, I've been "ma'am"ed on the phone one time too many, it's not funny anymore.

I think in your case, a videophone may be the answer. There is NO WAY someone could look at you and think "Ma'am".

I used to get that all the time when I was younger and skinny...hated it then, but it would almost cheer me up these days. :P

I remember the first time I noticed it happening -- I was about 10 or so. I was mortified. For much of the last 10 years, I didn't get any "sir"s at all -- hair down to your waist is still a fairly accurate gender clue. Since I got it chopped off, though, it's more and more common.

I suppose it doesn't help, the way I dress/present (today: jeans, boots, long-sleeve [technically from the men's department] t-shirt, no makeup, no purse, wallet in back pocket)...

bah.

The long hair does indeed do it. Anytime a waitperson sees me with my head down in the menu, they say, "what can I get you, ma'am"?

I find it either amusing or annoying. It's worse, though, when they're terribly mortified and keep being moritified after I tell them it's fine...

Boobs? Hips? You are *so* not built like a guy, at all, regardless of what part of you one is looking at.

Well, maybe your feet or something, but you know. :)

That's just, uh, I don't get it.

Yeah, my thought was "I'll be right back with you after I finish helping this gentleman with the gazongas."

I got ma'am a few times when I first had my hair long, but not for a while, that I remember anyway.

I often get, "Can I help you ladies?" when preciousjade and I are out and about. I actually think it's pretty funny. I guess I'm just in touch with my feminine side.
