I remember the first time I noticed it happening -- I was about 10 or so. I was mortified. For much of the last 10 years, I didn't get any "sir"s at all -- hair down to your waist is still a fairly accurate gender clue. Since I got it chopped off, though, it's more and more common.
I suppose it doesn't help, the way I dress/present (today: jeans, boots, long-sleeve [technically from the men's department] t-shirt, no makeup, no purse, wallet in back pocket)...
I often get, "Can I help you ladies?" when preciousjade and I are out and about. I actually think it's pretty funny. I guess I'm just in touch with my feminine side.

I find it either amusing or annoying. It's worse, though, when they're terribly mortified and keep being moritified after I tell them it's fine...

I got ma'am a few times when I first had my hair long, but not for a while, that I remember anyway.
