Hanging out next to the Beech StaggerwingscoyoteoJuly 9 2006, 19:56:43 UTC
Oh my gosh... I hope that I didn't walk right past you! I spent time at the end of the flying demo's photographing a beautiful red Beech Staggerwing across from the main announcer's tower near crosswalk #1. It was in show condition. I even commented to the group sitting beside it that I knew a woman who really wanted to be photographed in front of a Staggerwing... and that I hoped you got your wish :)

I did indeed, although I was hoping that you'd do the honors! While you were looking at the red one I was looking at the ivory one a couple planes down.
Thanks! This was the most interesting angle to me as it emphasized the checkered tail. Also, by shooting up slightly I didn't clutter the photo with other parked aircraft and crowds of people in the background. However, if I could have changed one thing, I would have slid the cockpit cover forward into the flying position (and then the other propeller would have been visible on the left side).
It must have looked pretty strange to bystanders when I sat right next to the tail with my wide angle lens. I was so close that I had to be careful not to bump the lens hood on the plane. Now if I could have just gotten imp_of_satan or yourself in a few shots... but then my 8 GB card would have seemed too small ;)
Thanks! It's funny how sometimes trying to get an artistic angle actually works.
To be honest, I was trying some of these wide-angle shots after seeing your success with punkythecat at the Nevada car show. Those were awesome photos and she looked great! I didn't have a beautiful model present, so I had to make due with just the planes ;)
Thanks, though I have to admit that I actually cropped this photo to a square format. It originally had more tail and wing visible, but there were some folks visible over the wing as well... thus I came up with this framing.

No worries. I'm off to a photo shoot down the street at 2, but I'll check out your journal later... I hope to see you in front of a Staggerwing :)
