I don't know how mice smell... but rats aren't bad if you have good bedding and change it often enough. I used to keep mine in a tank too, and it wasn't a problem.

As for your gender question... I can make that one real easy for you if you are concerned about smell. Boys smell more... which makes sense, because they have more musk.
However, girls are more hyperactive. Boys are more likely to enjoy sitting around on your shoulder, while girls will want to move around.

Personally, I wish I'd had boys... because of their more laid-back personalities.

And yeah... rats are very social, so you should never have one alone. They'll be happier with 2 or more in the same cage. (As opposed to hamsters, which do better alone.)

A good bedding I had with my rats was aspen chips.
