memo to self... when sewing... don't forget...

Especially when you're using little stitches to keep boning from going through... make *sure* that you've got the pieces together properly before you start... or at least notice it before you do all the wrong side stitching ( Read more... )

I feel for you. I am in the middle of making a 'pirate' coat, and didn't notice until after I had serged the raw edges (gotta make it neat, you know) that I had put the right cuff on the left sleeve and vice versa. And the sleeves on this pattern are slightly short to begin with. :-(

Fortunately, when I serged the raw edges I didn't take off much of the seam allowance, so after cutting off the serging I still had about 1/4" left and was still able to sew the cuffs (on the proper sleeves this time -- I checked three times!) over the original stitching line. Whew!

Yup, this is one of those times that I'm quite happy I have a regular sewing machine and not a serger.

I think I'm going to go ahead and flip it. I don't think it'll be worth the trouble to do it the other way.. especially since it's just a matter of weave pattern that is minor, and *shouldn't* mess too much with the other layers.

But just to be on the safe side, I'm copying out the pattern real quick, to catch the changes I made. *And* I'm going to go ahead and cheat with grommets except for the top 4-5 (to slow down the slip), since it's an undergarment anyway.

Sounds like a plan!

I am hoping to learn the art and language of sewing in our spare time from alliesutherland, partly so that I can understand and empathize with the frustrations sewers sometimes have...I know very little about edging, surging and the like and boning often looks exhausting to me.

Boning's not so bad.. unless it's cording stuffed into there.

Serger's a different machine... that usually actually *cuts* the edge of the fabric off as it stitches the edge shut... like what you see on the inside of most store-bought clothing.

Yeah, it's a neater finish (generally) look more easily (easily being the keyword... usually a seam that is spread out, pressed, etc. looks better, just takes way more time)... but if you make a mistake, you've lost the extra fabric there, and sometimes that's a *major* problem.

*g* My claim about the relationship of my sewing/fiber addictions and my interest in the SCA and Faire is that if we get you hooked with one, *eventually* we'll drag you over to the dark side of the other. It's cheaper garb that way, and if you get good at it, it's better fitting and better looking than much you could get out there at any price.

Are you going to be at the school anytime next week?

Still trying to figure that one out. I'm going up to HSES on Monday, since I'll be down at FRES for the first real day back the following Tuesday. Thursday afternoon and Friday are "attend CLC sessions or work at your school" days, so it'll depend on when I can get together with Tammy and/or Danielle, and when I end up scheduled for the CLC sessions.

Figure that as I've been only "making do" with the CLC, and never managed a session since they updated it over a year ago, I'd better plan to do so next week :-)
