William Shakespeare “” - I love this play, and not just because I have a soft spot from having acted in a performance of it. It’s the play I would give anybody who says they don’t like Shakespeare. It’s accessible. Really really accessible. Between the Mechanicals and Puck, there’s slapstick and wordplay and all-out zaniness that’s still funny today. I love that there are three stories (the faery world, the lovers, and the Mechanicals) all interwoven and building to the hilarious Pyramus and Thisbe play at the end. I had to look up a note or two in the back of the book when I didn’t understand a word (such as “An if” meaning, simply, “if”) or I am sure there is a clever bon mot I’m just not picking up on the full meaning (sniggering jokes about Titania’s infatuation with the transformed Bottom being related to the size of a donkey’s junk, for example), but otherwise it’s a breezily easy read ( ... )
