Ooof, as someone with lots of social anxiety, I can totally sympathize on that being really hard. I've gotten better in recent years at finding the lone person that looks even more uncomfortable than and going to talk to them, but it's rough. I'm guessing it'll be easier next time due to being a more familiar face, and if you introduce yourself to the marines, that they'll be excited to talk with someone with experience.

Go you for making the effort to make connections at the U with other servicepeople - I'm guessing it'll definitely get better.
