Went to Mexicali yesterday with Dan, Rex, and Roy so that Rex could blog the Mexicali gay pride parade. I decided it'd be more interesting if we crossed over into Mexico at Tecate and drove to Mexico that way because I always wanted to see La Rumorosa, a rocky mountain pass that descends from the mountains in the middle of Baja down to the desert ( Read more... )

The date shake stands are back in business! Thanks for the correction; it's clear that I'd conflated a couple of different trips. You wouldn't recognize the Lucerna - it's much bigger now (additional wings) and completely surrounded by dense city, with Blockbuster Video, KFC, Subway, and all the usual Mexican businesses.

I don't know how it was back then, but I stayed at Lucerna in 2008 and it's a super nice hotel. The pools are gorgeous, the rooms really comfy, and the staff very polite. I highly recommend it. (oh yeah, and very close, by the Universidad de Baja California campus they sell these kick ass carne asada tacos :) )

Isn't the "threat" to local businesses who don't want the competition? Most entrepreneurs, as far as I can tell, see no real problem with using state power to protect their business models--even when they've previously availed themselves of it to undermine the market share of their competitors.
