Yeah. re: perspective. See the post on my own LJ about Biglaw associates bitching about their bonuses in the presence of me (20 buck an hour temp). They make six figures. They have nothing to complain about; if they live modestly, that's more than enough to cover their obligations. Me? if I were a business, I'd have dissolved and wound up by now.
I know what you're saying! I spent all summer temping, and couldn't believe the crappy treatment I got from the Staff Attorneys, as well as the dips#%t associates. While I don't wish misfortune on anyone, I really wish that each of the attorneys in the chain, from staff to partner, had to spend some time as a temp to see what they were dealing with... my fellow temps were Harvard grads, Georgetown LLMs, patent attorneys, and other very solid folks, not the scrubs they seemed to take us for. And I never had to hear about their money woes!
What agency are you working with? $20/ hr is low - I was getting about $28 and that was the low end, so I was told. Not DC bar (which pays more...)
Anything I might do to assist you in gaining meaningful employment?
If you know of anyone who needs a new, sharp Virginia-barred civil litigator (with an affinity for commercial law), I'd be grateful.
I'm not temping in an attorney capacity; most of the job is data entry. I can't help myself though, and I've made a few comments (500-word memos) on substantive legal points that cross my desk. Hell, they can treat me like a scrub if they want, but I've got my pride--I'm at least as sharp as those guys at most of what they do.
Maybe my gunning annoys them. Well, whatever. What are they going to do--fire me? I'm a temp. They can't kill what's already dead on its feet.

None are hiring to the best of my knowledge, but I'd be happy to check in and see whether they've got openings or needs.
The private practice world is tough, as even the experienced are facing tough times. Big firms seem to be recovering, but slowly. Small and medium firms are being really cautious.
Any interest in government or other public type law? Term appointment policy jobs seem plentiful, for now... Did you by any chance do any academic work on health care or health policy?
