Car Theft

My Car was BROKEN INTO yesterday.

Here is the body of the email I sent my work's security supervisor concerning the incident:

==========================================

My name is Jason Mick and I work in the fuel cell systems division here at 2983 Waterview Dr. As you may have heard, my car was broken into last evening in the parking lot. I will try to relate as best I can the details of this incident and the accounts I have heard relating to it.

I left work at around 5:50 P.M to go running with my friend. Since we were running in Rochester we just took his car and left my car in the parking lot. I placed my pants, containing my wallet, under my passenger side seat along with my dress socks, dress shirt and tie. I drive a '99 red Dodge Stratus and it was parked two spaces from the two visitor spots, on the side closer to Waterview Drive.

I am sure that I locked my vehicle when I left it, and my friend recalls this as well. At the time of my departure, the spot to my right (next to the visitor spots) was unoccupied, while the space to my left I remember being occupied. At around 5:55 I left with my friend to go running.

From accounts of individuals including the security guard Tom, Kevin Fok, the two cleaning ladies, Vivek Kumar, and several other people it appears that the theft occured between 6 to 6:30, most likely at around 6:20 P.M.

When I returned to my car at 7:20, I discovered that the door was wide open, their were scratch marks on its inside and my pants were strewn across the seat. My first thought was to check for my wallet. To my alarm, my wallet which had been in my pants was now gone. I surveyed my car and then went inside and spoke with Tom. He said that he had seen no one, but that he has seen teenagers (likely from the nearby neighborhoods) walking through the parking lot in the past. Several of my coworkers and I have noticed this as well.

After speaking briefly with Tom I called the police. After about 40 to 45 minutes (around 8:15 P.M. ) Deputy Loken of the Rochester Hills Police Force arrived on the scene. He took a report and said that he thought that the car was likely opened up by a "slim jim" and that many cars today are still "relatively easy" to get into when locked.

After taking down a complete report he left the scene and I drove back home.

The incident concludes with the discovery of my wallet this morning. Apparently a Lear Corporation employee from across the street found the wallet in the parking lot. Their secretary pulled papers out of it and found my cell phone number and contacted me.

The only thing taken from my wallet was the cash. Two gift cards which I had mixed among personal ID and cards of little value were not taken. This and the fact that my door was left wide open leads me to believe that it was a rather sloppy/amateurish job. Also several cds in the back of my car were not taken. Thus, I am rather fortunate in that my net loss is only around 25 to 30 dollars and I have my wallet back.

I was later this morning contacted by the head of HR at Lear Corporation across the street. She inquired about details of the report and related to me that somebody at her building also had their vehicle broken into last night. She did not mention the exact time or if a police report was filed yet. It would be worthwhile to talk to her. I did not get her name, but her number is (248) 371-8118. The secretary, Debbie, who gave me my wallet has the number (248) 371-8400.

I understand that before this once or more in the past week my coworkers have had their car intruded and have had their personal effects sorted through, although no theft had occured in those cases. Between these reports, the incident that occured to me, and the accounts that similar theft occured across the street, I believe there is serious cause for concern.

The police officer I was taking information from did suggest that the building gets external cameras, particularly after these incidents. He said that with external cameras and a recording system, any persons participated in a theft can be essentially mug shotted and ID'ed. I wanted to relay this suggestion to you.

All in all I am just shocked that an incident of this nature would occur here, because this seems a fairly nice area. I am also shocked by the fact that the car being locked did not seemed to deter the burglar. I am greatly relieved that the wallet was recovered, at least, so that I did not permanently loose my license, school id, and other personal items that would be difficult to replace.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Thank you for your time.
