sometimes, we need a huge reminder

I prefer to stay away from conversaions involving politics, religion, and kids. Each one of those subject matters are very personal and opinions get very strong. I, generally, apply the live and let live theory to my life ( Read more... )

Hon, I agree - speak up more! The main difference between us and the homophobes is that we are nice and too often silent.

It's so much more important to be true to yourself and your beliefs in life. Staying true while always keeping an open mind.

I would argue against that. I won't talk to people who can't stop reminding me that they are gay, or christian, or even huge fans of the latest fad.

If those things are what defines you as a person, you aren't interesting to me.

Maybe you are who you are because you're gay, but that doesn't make it your most important quality.

It would like saying black people are defined by being black. I can see a point where it is not legal to hate people for being black, but just making it illegal to do it doesn't make it go away.

Stupid people abound. Just add her to the list, if you feel really strongly, support whoever runs against her in some way, she's got to run every two years. 2010 is really right around the corner.

I agree with much of what you say. People are always going to have differences and conflicts. When something is considered a hate crime, then it goes to a federal level vs. staying local where, many times, the investigation is poorly handled or the punishment does not fit the crime.

Oh, and if you think Silence is Compliance, you are a fucking idiot. Other people seem to think that every difference of opinion is just cause for protest and demonification. Not generally talking about hate crimes here, but do I need to protest in support for a bill which basically just changes the sentencing guidelines for certain crimes under certain circumstances? Or should I be making better choices when I vote for judges (who are responsible for sentencing) based on their records? Which is more responsible? People elect representatives, people get to dismiss judges. Everone is responsible for how things work. Its not "the man". Its you.

I guess I should have been more specific. I started thinking about how often we just write things off with the excuse of "that's just ____" If a friend's behavior is out of line, then we should not ignore it or they are going to continue to think it is o.k. If you were drinking heavily every single day, I would want to point out the risks you are taking with your health. You do not have to take my advice, but at least the seed has been planted.
It's not a gay thing or a straight thing but a high school ended years ago thing.

I think we agree, I'm just very tired of some peoples notions of "Silence is Compliance".

BTW I think it ridiculous how little time I get to hang out with you.
