Ianto stared into the grey afternoon sky. The team had been up all night tracking down a malfunctioning alien device. At least they hoped it was malfunctioning and didn't emit carcinogenic gas by design. After they got it contained Jack gave them the day off and sent them home. Ianto lay in his bed and tried to go back to sleep.
Funny how he never felt tired while caring for Lisa. He slept when his body told him it was time to sleep and there was nothing else to do. The Hub had a tiny "guest room" off the shower, but no one ever used it. The others sacked out on the couch. They thought Ianto had used it, but he had crept down to Lisa's chamber and slept on a camp cot beside her bed, holding her hand and dreaming strange dreams full of shining metal and white silk threads.
Now he felt tired all the time. When he wasn't working he came home, lay down, and fell in and out of a twilight daze. He preferred working.
He couldn't lay there any longer today. It occurred to him as he got out of bed that he was going to miss tonight's practice session with Jack. The workouts helped him relax and sleep better.
He heard a knock on the door. He opened it and found Jack Harkness standing there. Ianto was surprised. Jack had never visited him before, or any of the others as far as he knew.
"Hello. Can I come in?" Ianto nodded and stood aside. Jack walked in and stared around in fascination.
Ianto's eyes followed Jack's gaze. The furniture was in place, but packing boxes still lined the walls. Most of the furnishings were still inside them. Lisa's things were all set neatly in place, down to the PDA and the picture frames.
"Why are you here, Jack?"
Jack turned to look at Ianto. "You wanted to talk about Lisa when we were camping. I'm here to talk about Lisa."
Ianto felt like he'd been punched in the stomach. "I don't want to talk about Lisa to you. You killed her. I know you had a reason, but you still killed her."
Jack nodded. "Fair point. But I think I deserve a chance to learn about who I killed." He glanced around the room again. His eyes came to rest on a photograph of Lisa at a marathon. "She was a runner."
"She loved to race. She loved challenges." Ianto picked up the photo album and sat down on the couch. He didn't know if he wanted to talk about Lisa or if he wanted to hurt Jack by talking about Lisa, but the urge to talk welled up inside him.
Jack sat down beside him. Ianto opened the album and began to talk. He told the story of every photo in the book, from their first date to the last page. Ianto poured out stories of Lisa's love of life, of music, or contests, of her work for Torchwood, of people.
Jack listened quietly. After Ianto finished speaking he sat still for a long time, then said, "She sounds like a wonderful women. I wish I'd met her."
"You did."
"Did I?"
"You --"
"Did I?"
Ianto gave up. Jack had a point. Lisa hadn't been acting like herself at the end. But Ianto wasn't going to admit that to Jack.
"Why are you here, Jack?"
"You deserve a chance to talk about Lisa. The others deserve not to hear it if they don't want to."
"But why are you here? Why are you keeping me around? I know Torchwood procedures, I should be in a body bag by now."
Jack frowned at Ianto. "You know Torchwood procedures. You don't know my procedures." He sighed. "Look. A long time ago, I messed up as badly as you did. I didn't even have love as an excuse. I was given a second chance too."
"You were going to kill me that day."
"At that point you were an enemy combatant. You do what you have to do. But I wanted to salvage you if I could. I could use someone of your talents and drive working for me, not at cross-purposes." Jack reached over and patted Ianto's thigh.
Ianto stared off into the distance and nodded. Jack got up and walked to the door. "I've got to get back to work."
"Is that all?" Ianto asked abruptly.
"What?"
"Is that your only reason for keeping me?"
Jack looked confused. "What?"
Ianto plunged on. "I thought for a while there you fancied me. I'm tainted now. You could put any conditions you wanted on my staying. Make me do anything."
Jack glared at him. "Would that count as rape or extortion by the current definitions? Or sexual slavery? I can never keep up with the changes. Bad idea no matter what you call it. And you know why?"
"Why?"
Jack grinned wickedly. "Because you're everything I like. You're pretty, smart, gutsy, cool-headed, and you get things done. If I tried that you'd figure out a way to kill me in my own bed."
Ianto couldn't help laughing. "Probably." He got up and walked to the door to let Jack out.
Jack turned in the doorway before he went out. "One thing, Ianto. This is your second chance. You don't get a third."
"Yes sir."
