Now that the final reviews are in and the Christmas flu is winding down, I finally have time to watch Merlin. I've seen the first three episodes so far, and I haven't been disappointed.
Hi I thought your analysis was really interesting especially as I don't know much about the differences in arthurian legends. I went back and watched the scene with the chores again, because I hadn't really noticed Arthur's reaction before, but I can see what you mean. I also noticed that at the end after Merlin says he's a fast learner, Arthur replies with 'I hope for your sake that's true' now he could be talking about chores, but I don't see him really punishing Merlin for not doing chores well so maybe he was talking about something else.
Hi! I'm so pleased to see you trying out Merlin. I've always felt that those who can appreciate Doctor Who or Torchwood would likely enjoy Merlin as well. And since I don't really know the traditional Arthurian literature/ mythology well enough to make comparisons, I really appreciate you doing so.
I noticed someone else commenting about the references to Christianity. Merlin says something in the season finale (1.13 Morte d'Arthur) that likely reinforces your point. I look forward to reading your thoughts as you go through the season :-)
I love your analysis. As a sad little girl with little knowledge of Arthurian legend, this made me grin with all the elements that you've pointed out. I learned from this! Thanks. :)
