He doesn’t blame himself for not siding with Castiel about the souls or about Purgatory. Clearly, he was right about the wrongness of that particular move. He does however blame himself with ferocity just this shy of self flagellation for not being there for his friend.
Achy is the one word that comes to mind when trying to describe this fic, and it fits. Everything hurts, and it makes a great read when you're looking for some angst.
