Racquet Abuse Prevention (R.A.P)
By Wai
Before Atobe turned Pro, he snorted at the very thought of throwing a tantrum on the court. He used to watch old tennis footage on TV and he would scowl at players who would resort to racquet abuse in order to release their frustration. But when he finally turned Pro and the pressure was ten times worse than the High School circuit--which he expected, though he overestimated his tolerance to that type of pressure--he started snarling at the chair umpires.
When he received his first warning from the tournament directors, he was extremely insulted. And he almost lashed out. Luckily he caught himself before he could and quickly regained his composure. After assuring them in his silkiest voice--his eyebrow was twitching at the time, which said a lot about his control--that it wouldn't happen again, he decided that he should release his anger another way while playing a match.
The first time he smacked his racquet on the court--leaving a nice scratch on the brand new Prince racquet--he was surprised at how calm he felt after venting his frustration on the piece of metal and strings. And it happened frequently after that. He didn't throw his racquet across the court, thankfully, because he knew that a nasty fine would follow that action, but he would sometimes whack the racquet on the grass or hard courts. Or let it bounce once off the surface at least.
The commentators made a lot of jokes about this particular habit of his, which wasn't really as bad as the chanting and the jacket throwing and the finger snapping and the words that usually made the Japanese--and other people who understood the language--girls swoon while the boys and other people stared. It caused a media frenzy when he stopped the racquet abuse. When one brave journalist asked, Atobe's manager quickly stepped in to end the interview.
What they didn't know was that Atobe quickly put an end to his racquet abuse problem after one Echizen Ryoma of Japan, world number 3, made a smartass comment after the same brave journalist who asked Atobe about his racquet abuse problem asked Echizen what he thought of his countryman's tendency to throw his racquet around.
"I'm considering setting some of my prize money aside and creating an institution for abused racquets."
Yukimura Seiichi, world number 1, seated next to Ryoma on the panel of players being grilled by the press, had to smother his snickers by faking a cough.
Later, when Echizen Ryoma came home, he found current world number 2, Tezuka Kunimitsu on the couch, nursing a gigantic headache. Sanada Genichirou, the most sought-after tennis trainer in the world and Echizen's current trainer, wasn't looking too good himself.
Fuji Syuusuke, on the other hand, looked absolutely smug.
"Nice question, Fuji." Echizen said with a smirk.
"Why thank you, Echizen-kun."
"Are you going to ask Atobe why he stopped abusing his racquets when he finally does?"
"Of course."
Sanada groaned and reached across the table for the bottle of extra strength tylenol.
