It's a beautifully written story that weaves together the present and past to create a richly detailed exploration of Gene, Sam and the relationship between them.
Oh and did I mention this story is written around the premise that Gene is from the future?
With that twist in mind, the plot is absorbing and the characterisations and dialogue are truly impeccable.
Perfectly executed and definitely worth reading.
Sam definitely sees it now. He might as well have actually received a punch in the gut, because that’s where Gene draws a line, that’s where it’s too far and not funny and wrong. Sam remembers arguing with Maya once, and she told him he had been too protected for too long - either with good people or scum of the earth. He’d stopped believing that real people, people who weren’t disgusting, warped fucks like he dealt with so often, could actually think like this. She’d laughed at him in the end, for being a police officer who was so ridiculously sheltered. He’d brushed it off and thought she was over-reacting. But then, he hadn’t been ‘out’ in 2006 - not that he had anything to be out about. And here he is in 1973, confused about something that seems quite simple with this much liquor in his system.
No amount of musing changes the look in Gene’s eyes, clear as day, wrong and sick and don’t push your fucking luck.
