They're both just out of their teens, and working on a fishing boat together. Both of them have emotional baggage, and they're the new guys, thrown together in the room nobody else wants. The atmosphere of the fic is gritty, and I'm especially impressed by how the few things Duck and Joe carry with them say so much about their history.
