Everybody Talks
At six years old kids are finding their place, most of the time you can figure out whom your child is going to become at six years old, Lee Hyukjae is no exception, but he finds himself at a park.
He usually sneaks out of the house to go to this certain park - because his mama doesn’t like it, she’s always saying it’s run down and creepy, children shouldn’t be playing at it. (“It’s no good Hyukjae” she said) but Hyukjae likes this park, he’s always the only one who goes to it.
Yet today is a peculiar day, another boy is at the park he goes to everyday (or every other day) swinging idly and slowly, toes dragging in the dirt.
Lee Donghae, he only recognizes him because everyone knows Lee Donghae, Donghae is nice and smiles a lot, Donghae is very popular and loved.
“Hey” Hyukjae says softly when he approaches the popular boy in another class from him - a class across the hall, Donghae isn’t very far, and he would like a new friend.
“Hey” but Donghae isn’t smiling like everyone says he does - Donghae is frowning, and his eyes are dull, not shining with happiness.
“What’s wrong?” Hyukjae frowns.
“My dad…” Donghae whispers softly, biting his bottom lip that had begun to shake - “is really sick” he finishes, and Hyukjae is frowning.
“Sick?” He whispers back, thinking if he speaks to loudly someone will hear their conversation, “my sister said… When someone is sick you have to make one hundred cranes.” Hyukjae says softly remembering that Sora said that’s what she did when Hyukjae was four and became deadly ill.
“Does it work?”
“I think so” Hyukjae mutters, and smiles his large gummy smile. “I’ll help you.”
“Really?” Donghae grips the metal links holding the swing to the bar, Hyukjae nods, his brushed clean hair his mother had done this morning being ruined in a matter of seconds.
Lee Donghae is Lee Hyukjae’s best friend, Donghae tells Hyukjae that every day when they turn ten.
Junsu (Hyukjae’s other friend) doesn’t like it very much, always claiming that Hyukjae is his best friend as well.
But each time the argument arises Hyukjae secretly thinks that no, Lee Donghae is my best friend. Because you can only have one best-friend, and Hyukjae likes Donghae a tad bit more than Junsu.
Donghae and him complete each other - he thinks, Donghae is talkative and loved by everyone, Hyukjae is the Earthly one, who thinks straight and wonders things Donghae doesn’t even understand.
They fit together perfectly, and they’re considered a ‘pair’ by everyone, Hyukjae likes being called a pair, it means they’re always together, that they are one.
And they are always together - where there is Lee Hyukjae, there is Lee Donghae.
Even their families, (“Donghae is such a good boy” Hyukjae’s mother coo’s often) and Hyukjae is usually at his house with Donghae, or at Donghae’s.
Hyukjae likes Donghae’s family, they are nice and very kind to each other - Donghae’s dad never did get better completely, but he isn’t as ill as he was. Hyukjae sometimes wonders if their hard 2 week work at making one hundred cranes even when neither knew how was for nothing.
But when he see’s Donghae dad walking and talking, he knows it wasn’t.
Their families are very close, when there is a family reunion for one family - Hyukjae’s family will attend too, (“Because our family is your family, and yours is ours.” Donghae’s mom often says) and Hyukjae agrees, their families are one.
Lee Donghae and Lee Hyukjae are inseparable.
They have their first fight when they turn twelve.
It’s over something silly - because Hyukjae likes a girl from another class, the prettiest girl in their school, and Donghae is easily jealous - even more than Junsu.
Donghae stomps his feet, and shoves his hands into his coat pockets, grumbling and sulking all day long because Hyukjae told Donghae about his crush on Minsoo - by the end of the day, Hyukjae has had enough.
“Best friends always break apart when one gets a girlfriend.” Donghae reasons, and pouts and even tears up a bit.
“But no matter if it’s the prettiest of girls, no one can replace you Donghae.” Hyukjae says softly, grabbing Donghae’s hand in his and wonders if he should kiss him - because Donghae likes kisses, and usually forgives Hyukjae when he kisses Donghae.
So he leans over, in the middle of the school court yard (even though many have gotten use to their odd displays of affection) and gives Donghae a soft peck on the lips - hoping that he’ll be forgiven for his bad doings and making Donghae worry so much.
Donghae blushes, and puffs out his cheeks, looking down to avoid Hyukjae’s hopeful eyes.
“Are you going to go out with her though?” He whispers, and Hyukjae contemplates if it’s really worth it, Donghae doesn’t seem to like the idea.
“I guess not” Hyukjae smiles broadly, and Donghae slides his fingers in-between Hyukjae’s, smiling as well.
“Okay, I promise not to date someone if you don’t want me too, too.”
And they pinky promise - just because Donghae believes pinky promises can’t be broken.
When they turn fourteen people transaction from calling them a ‘pair’ to calling them a ‘couple’, Hyukjae doesn’t care very much, and Donghae just laughs at it more often then he comments on it.
Hyukjae’s mother doesn’t like the transaction of what their relationship is being called, though. Donghae’s parents don’t really see to care, they seem to support it - actually.
So Hyukjae starts to object - just a tad, to make himself and his mom feel better.
And then Donghae starts to laugh less when people call them a couple.
“Do you not like people calling us a couple?” Donghae asks when their holding hands and walking around the mall - looking at things they can eat later.
“I don’t really care” Hyukjae yawns into his free hand, pointing at a shirt he thinks would look nice on Donghae, “why?”
“You started denying it.” Donghae points out - and Hyukjae is even surprised Donghae pays attention to things like that, he’s always kind of thought of Donghae like an idiot.
“We aren’t a couple though” Hyukjae says and Donghae pulls his hand away from Hyukjae’s.
“I know” Donghae spits loudly, and turns on his heel and marches away, calling a ‘I’m going home!’ over his shoulder, Hyukjae is left in front of a clothes shop, people giving him odd stares, alone.
“I don’t see why he’s angry.” Hyukjae sulks, forehead pressed against his desk as he mumbles all his worries to his friend Junsu - even though they don’t talk and hang out as much as they used too, Junsu has his own best friends, Jaejoong, Yunho, Yoochun and ‘the idiot that humps fridges’.
“Maybe he likes you” Junsu says, flipping to the next page in his text book. “I wouldn’t be surprised if you two are actually dating. You still kiss, two guys don’t kiss.”
“He likes kissing.” Hyukjae murmurs, “if he likes me why wouldn’t he say anything? We tell each other everything Junsu.” He says flatly, and Junsu shrugs.
“Not everything” Junsu corrects, “everyone keeps secrets.”
Hyukjae puffs out his cheeks and sulks for a good minute.
“I need to go you know, Jaejoong-hyung wants to go out for lunch and talk about something, why is everyone telling me their damn problems lately?”
“Are Jaejoong and Yunho dating?”
“Not yet” Junsu smiles that creepy I-know-what-to-do-smile. “Like you and Donghae, now go ask him what the hell is wrong.”
“What’s wrong?” Hyukjae says out randomly when Donghae is about to walk past him, and thankfully Donghae stops mid-step, turning to look at Hyukjae.
“Nothing” Donghae says, because he likes to think Hyukjae can read minds (even though Hyukjae can’t)
“Please just tell me what’s wrong - Donghae.”
“You” Donghae spits out, looking over to Siwon, “go on without me, I’ll catch up later.” Siwon just shrugs and marches off, and both of them ignore Ryeowook’s worried (but very loud) whisper of, are they having a lovers quarrel?
“What did I do?” Hyukjae hisses back - cause Donghae is being unreasonable, he didn’t do anything.
“Can’t you see?” Donghae wheezes out, and his eyes are watering. “That I like you?”
And Hyukjae blushes - because Junsu saw it, everyone saw it before him - and he grabs Donghae’s smaller more narrow wrist, pressing Donghae straight up against the wall, leaning forward and catching his lips.
And both are staring at each other, blushing and tearful eyes.
“I kind of think I love you too.”
And their noses are pressed against each others, eyes staring into each other’s soul.
“You think?”
Hyukjae smiles - “I know” he corrects, and they kiss again, and again.
And if it isn’t love, it’s the closes thing he’ll get ever get to it.
