internships are terrifying to apply for, it helps if you have friends of friends who are happy to help you out (see: nepotism).
the trick is to avoid the high-rolling gin joints that everyone flocks to because a) they're swamped with overachieving wankers, b) there's usually a long waiting list with a six-month deadline, and c) it's likely that you'll end up on coffee runs instead of learning anything useful. look around for the smaller/lesser-known companies that are always happy for the unpaid labour (I'm assuming the american system is like the australian one but I could be wrong). and I mean, the gems are always where you least expect it. I was all "horses whut" but it turns out the editor is a leader in his field, so.
