Three years from now I will have finished my masters degree, and my car's warrenty will be up. So I'm going to have it converted to a biodiesel. That's right it will then run on veggie oil. Curious about what the hell I'm babbling about ( Read more... )

i can say from being in a car with you for 2 hours, you're already getting one form of gas from them now.

i heard about this on npr last year, you should try and make a deal with a resteraunt or something to get the oil but transporting it is gonna be a bitch. and if you're living in portland, you're going to have to worry about it freezing and becoming solid, no?. i didn't bother reading the article so i'd imagine you already know that

I don't know what the gas comment is all about. But you are lucky I wasn't vommiting in your back seat. I drank way too many shots that night, and from Sara's pictures I'm sad to say there are more shots than I remember.

About the oil, the article says they are working on modifing the molecule in the oil so it doesn't freeze. Something about making it take a different shape, the resulting oil will be inedible so no free oil from fast food places.

Do you think it will wreck my car, or that it will be a huge pain in my ass to deal with the oil?

And I have no problem with public transport, I have now sucessfully navigated subway systems in multiple different languages. It's a piece of cake.

unlikely that you'll find yourself relying on public transportation instead of your own vehicle in portland since their public transport. system is little better than the one here in orlando.

There are also biodiesel fueling stations in a small number of other cities, mainly out west, i don't know about portland. to run off biodiesel here, you could go to the restaurants in the area and pick up their used vegetable oil which, to my understanding, they would be eager to give away because otherwise they need to pay to have it disposed of. but the problem is not that, the problem is turning this into something usable by your car. you need to first strain the oil, then use a variety of harsh and dangerous chemicals like methanol and lye. there are some other methods that require a bit less mixing work but require you to add a second fuel tank and start your car on diesel and then switch. it's a big ordeal, but not something that you couldn't do if you have the knowledge and the strength of your convictions ( ... )
