Years ago, the SF Chronicle, reprinted "And The Band Played On" as installments in the newspaper. Didn't Randy Shilts criticize the City for not closing the gay bathhouses quickly enough?

i don't know how he felt at the time, but in hindsight keeping them open under the guise of protecting lifestyle rights was detrimential to the community. i know larry kramer was very vocal about closing them and was called a prude and a traitor. in an historical context, there was no information saying exactly how the virus was spread so some gays viewed closing them as a slippery downward slope.

I was going to college in SF during those days, and remember watching the young gay guys quickly wasting away. It was very sad, as the drugs that are now in use were of course, not available. They would waste away and die in a few months.

I have a theory that women civilize men, and one example is that most men will indiscriminately fuck their brains out when the opportunity presents itself. But most women will not allow it, and save us from ourselves. When hundreds of men got together in those bathhouses, hedonism was rampant, without limits.

This former AIDS analyst for the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights contends that estimates of the number of infected people, and of the risks to heterosexuals, have been grossly exaggerated, arguing further that the epidemic appears to be peaking. According to Fumento, two groups have fueled the alarmist myth: prudish conservative moralists and liberal "democratizers" eager to demonstrate that AIDS is not a "gay plague." His allegation that AIDS research has drained funds from the fight against cancer will outrage activists who want more federal dollars spent on AIDS. Among this polemic's more controversial or startling contentions is the assertion that the incidence of AIDS in Africa has been ( ... )
