Just on the news. Signs went up at all county offices across California this morning. All gays and lesbians arriving for a marriage license will be turned away.
We were going to do it on the 14th b/c that day meant something to us as it would be our two year anniversary of Domestic Partnership. I didn't think this would happen. I didn't want to rush it and have it be less meaningful us, "just to do it".......on one hand I wish we did and on another I'm glad we didn't.
I know for all the important thing it doesn't mean much until it's Federally recognized, but California has always been a civil rights leader, so this is a huge blow for hopes of Federal.....kiss that goodbye for another long while now.
I hate that in a time all oppressed people *should* be filled with joy and hope, this is being done to us.
I know Crack. I wanted it to be defeated too. Not like we had much chance in Texas unless they pass a federal law.
Sue and I were interviewed by a woman for a social justice class last night, and you know what? I've forgotten the myriad ways that we as queers adjust our lives to straight people. She was asking questions about 'how do you decide to come out' and when is it dangerous for you to be openly gay, how legally is your relationship different from someone who's married.
When I went to bed, my stomach hurt. I think I had constructed my own little bubble and just poo poohed any compromises that we have to make on a daily basis as 'what needs to be done'. You just adapt.
I hope that we can get this one overturned too. It may have to be sanctioned by the courts. It more then likely will have to be sanctioned by the court.
I'm sorry that you and Jess can't get married right now.
Crack, here is a website which names all those who gave money to pass 8. At least we can be informed of who are enemies are, other than the obvious. I am shortly going to be doing an entry on LJ regarding this as well. But in the meantime: http://californiansagainsthate.com/dishonorRoll.html
I noticed a few San Diego area contributors, some of whom are business owners there. If you have any contacts in the local SD queer community you might want to let them know so queer folks aren't patronzing these businesses.
