New Faces

Who: Rilkie, Edlyn, Nicholai
What: Rilkie comes across two new faces in the bowl.
Where: Central Bowl, Telgar Weyr
When: Day 11, month 7, Turn 13, of the Interval. It is a summer afternoon.

Central Bowl, Telgar Weyr

A stony field is the center of this great caldera, the size of which is unmatched at any other Weyr--for the whole complement of all the wings at Telgar could rest comfortably within its towering cliffs. Shaped in a perfect oval, the rock walls seem ideal for keeping the usual chill winds stirring about. The ground is mostly made of pebbles and rocks, some hued the milky shades of old quartz, though there are patches where softer dirt and even trees sprout up from the ground. To the south, the bowl opens onto the living caverns and the Weyrleaders' quarters; the immense entrance to the Hatching Grounds lies to the northwest. Heading southwest will lead one back out into the rocky mountain ranges around Telgar's protective walls. Dragons may be seen, relaxing or fresh from feeding, to the north, as well as the soft lapping sounds of Telgar's lake touching the sandy shore. The Weyrling Barracks, always aflutter with activity, are to the direct west. If you're looking for the 'dutypair' to take you to an outweyr destination, they can be found here. Fall leaves cling around the edges of the bowl, and the trees near the lake are bedecked with bronze and red splendor.

Its later in the morning, the air is cool and crisp against the backdrop of a cloudless sky. Residents and riders alike are traveling to and fro - set on tasks for the day and not stopping to chat. Idle time is left for meals and evenings. A lanky girl has set herself to the side of most of the activity. She's kneeling on one of the rocky trails, picking through the stones there. A quartz-like stone is lifted and brought closer for inspection. "Hm, I dunno. Maybe," Edlyn murmurs to herself.

Rilkie is walking with purpose through the bowl, heading towards the lake, where a few dragons, including a large, bulky brown, can be seen in the distance, wading or taking a dip. On her way, she passes near to Edlyn, and the girl's curiosity in something on the ground piques her own, as well. "What's that?" she asks, despite herself, craning her neck to try and see what's in the girl's hand. Perhaps a bit of a rude interruption, but she doesn't seem to notice.

Edlyn is surprised at the interruption, notable by the blush that rises to her cheeks. "Oh, well, ma'am.. I was just looking for some fancy stones." She rises from the ground, dusting her skirts off quickly. "I wasn't going to take it, or anything," her eyes shift to the side, as her feet shuffle in the dirt. "But I just thought it was a pretty stone. My mother would like." Her hand flicks out and opens to show the semi-glossy stone to the woman.

Rilkie laughs. "It's just a stone. There's more than enough of them in the bowl." Her smile is friendly and reassuring. She takes a look at the stone, nodding. "It /is/ pretty. Surprising what you can find just lying on the ground, isn't it?" Her eyes spot another on the ground, not of quartz but of an interesting, deep blue, and she picks it up. "Like this one... unusual color, isn't it? Oh-- and it's just Rilkie. Not Ma'am. I'm not nearly old enough for Ma'am."

Edlyn bends down to peer at the stone. "You're right, it is pretty. My mother /loves/ stones. I always try and pick up one or two for her when I'm traveling." She flashes a smile at Rilkie, "No, you don't look that old, but you are a rider. My parents would be very upset with me if I didn't come off as polite. Shells, my mother would just be in stitches about it!" She exhales and rolls her eyes, grinning crookedly. "But that's how parents are, I suppose."

"Well, I guess it's good to be careful of your manners," the brownrider agrees, "But at least in my case, 'Rilkie' is perfectly polite enough." She tosses the blue stone back onto the ground, picking up another, smaller one of a smoky quartz and peering at it with curiosity. "That's thoughtful of you. I should probably be a better daughter, send my parents presents. But I don't see them very often, anymore."

Edlyn shrugs her shoulders, tossing the quartz up and down idly. "Well, it keeps them happy, right? Oh, and I forgot to introduce m'self. I'm Edlyn, of Greenfields Hold. Are you familiar with it?" Her eyes squint slightly at the other girl, speculative. "My father's the bes--, well, er, he's one of the vintner's there. I just came up with our journeyman beastcrafter. Today's our tithe of herdbeasts and such." She tilts her head, "Your parents must just be content to have a dragonrider in the family, I imagine."

"Rilkie, brown Ancaith's," the rider finally introduces herself more formally. "Glad to meet you, Edlyn. And I think I've heard the name. We greatly appreciate your tithes. Ancaith, I'm sure, will be glad to know there's more herdbeast arriving." She grins. "As for my parents-- oh, they're very proud. And they understand I don't have time to visit home often, despite the fact I've the transportation." A little shrug-- what can you do? "Is this your first visit to a Weyr? Must be pretty different from your home Hold."

Nicholai makes his way from one side of the bowl with long stride, despite short legs. His posture may suggest a slight irritation or agitation. His hands curl and uncurl from fists. The walk quite obviously has no destination as he suddenly turns, loops and stops. The more he paces, the slower the rapid walk becomes. The stout boy stands still for a moment, not far from Rilkie or Edlyn, panting lightly.

Edlyn shakes her head, sending her hair flipping about her face. "Shells, the first time I came to the Weyr I was in such a shock! With all the space, and dragons, and people." Her hand flies upwards to wave around, indicating the place at large. She quickly finger-combs her hair and grins. "But ever since that visit, I've managed to come by way of tithes - either with my father, or the beastcrafter. I'm good with the beasts," she adds as an after thought. A frown flicks its way across her features as brows are drawn down as she eyes Nicholai. "Lots of different sorts here, that's certain."

"That's true. The Weyr is rarely short on surprises, with all the activity and the number of people. Always something going on." Rilkie tosses the second stone back onto the ground, noting the new arrival and sending a smile in his direction. "You're good with beasts? Don't think that's something I'd be good at. They seem like a lot of work."

Nicholai watches the two for a moment, whatever aggitation had filled his postured dicipates. After a long moment he smiles and nods, "Hi." He looks as if he wants to join the conversation, but he hesitates remaining where he is, a few paces from the girls.

"There's no use in being shy," Edlyn directs to the boy, brows still furrowed into a frown. "I mean, Rilkie's a respectable dragonrider - a brown, no less- but she doesn't bite." The girl shakes her head and flicks a grin at Rilkie. "Yeah, beasts are easy! Just takes practice... speaking of which, I see the journeyman looking for me. I'd best get back to work!" She tosses the stone up in the air, grabs it with a wink and then tears off in the direction of the man. "I'm coming, I'm coming!"

Rilkie laughs and waves to the visiting girl as she runs off in the direction of the Journeyman. "It's true, I don't bite," she says to the approaching young man, "But for the moment, my dragon's insisting I'm needed." He, too, is given a wave in departure and an apologetic smile, and the brownrider heads off. "Oh, Ancaith, it better be /important!/"
