I just had to say that you managed to express very clearly the jumble in my brain about why I've been sort of 'meh/whatever' about the whole "strike". And really, looking at past events that impacted and upset the user community (Strikethrough, I am looking at you!), this basic-free-account thing is, well, not that big a deal.
(I take more issue with SUP's means of communicating this change, but even then, it's like.. well... whatever.)
This CNet article explains some of it. Basically, an activist group called "Warriors for Innocence" [with possible Dominionist ties] started complaining to LJ about content on some user journals & communities -- ranging from fanfic comms to furry comms to anything-else-that-seemed-potentially-related-to-sex-with-minors or depictions thereof. And LJ just deleted the comms and accounts without warning/discussion. LJ later reinstated most (if not all) of the deleted accounts... but it was pretty remarkable how a small group got LJ to suspend/delete many accounts on little to no legal basis.
