I once got signed up for some crazy far-right Christian fundamentalist mailing list. I think sometimes they use lists from other organizations or just kind of type random names with @hotmail.com or @gmail.com at the end of them and see if they get a hit.
His campaign apparently did some fairly serious datamining. I heard was that the people who signed up to get the text of the VP announcement to their cell phone might have had their contacts lists imported into a campaign database. So who knows?

Sadly, yes. Frequently they have to click (or fail to unclick) a checkbox, but in this case, it's their decision, not yours.
I'm pretty sure that if you check out the e-mail or website, there will be a way to unsubscribe. I can't see the Obama Campaign wanting to alienate voters with spam.
