(1) Hello?

[Sasaki's morning found her more confused than she had been in years. To all outward appearances, she was suddenly a member of American society from the Golden Age of the 1950s. This was a subject she was fairly well read on, as she was on many subjects ( Read more... )

"I may be of some assistance, if you'd like, Mamzel."

Ah, perhaps. I seem to have arrived here without my knowledge, and altered somewhat physically. Also, a person who is unrelated to me is claiming to be my father.

[Sasaki thinks: Hm, you are French, and a little formal for an American...]

"I myself was altered physically. Mayfield takes quite a bit away in that regard. I have run into a similar situation with a wife, and two children ( ... )

[Ah, Sasaki's first impression must have been wrong, then. :) How international, she thinks. However, there is almost no pause between his finished sentence and her speaking up again.]

Hmm, I believe I have several questions. Who is Mayfield, and do you know what the mechanism is by which he or she 'removes things'? Is this area physically located in the United States? Is it accessible to the outside world? What is the selection basis between people who are drones and people who are not? And, incidentally, who are you?

[She smiles faintly.] I usually do not have so many questions. I apologize for the inconvenience.

That's... is that you, Sasaki?

Ah, Kyon! Well, I had hoped to see you again soon, but not under conditions as strange as these, perhaps. I have to say, I am a little flummoxed, and you know this isn't a state I'm easily put in.

What is going on? Is it your friend Suzumiya's doing, with these strange reality-controlling powers? This would certainly be the first compelling evidence I have seen.

Wait a minute, hold it. Since when did you know anything about Haruhi?

[A pause.]

Well, I believe it was a few weeks ago that Kyoko spilled her secret identity to me, as well as the ramifications with your friend Suzumiya, but you haven't shown any particular interest in this before. Is something wrong, Kyon?

[Kyoko . . . For some reason, she had mistaken it momentarily for 'Kyon', resulting in a lifted receiver, but she otherwise had no reason to initiate conversation with this person. Nonetheless, there is the sound of light breathing that may be heard through the phone.

The initiative to acknowledge and understand the errors that build in her memory banks . . . She had been encouraged to be Outgoing. It is too much to ask of her at present, but she will respond if someone speaks to her.]

Ah...

Is someone there?

[There is only quiet breathing for a few moments longer. And then . . . Ah. Yes. This person was of interest, after all.]

Ah. You are . . .

Please, call me Sasaki. I don't think I recognize this voice, so if I may, who are you?

Tch. Exams are a waste of time. One must truly experience hardships, not merely....test on them.

If possible, it seems to me it would be best to avoid hardships entirely. However, exams are a hardship enough for many students! Luckily, in our modern lives, we have a system which is to some extent adapted for our more theoretical kinds of hardship.

For me, the purpose of exams is not to be a hardship, but to be a practical basis. But in any case, I would like to ask who I am speaking to, please.

It is still a waste! While you fools are sitting in class making no use of anything, you could be taking part in more practical pursuits!

And you cannot tell who this king is?

There is a certain validity to this viewpoint, but the educational system's theoretical basis is that practical knowledge takes longer to develop than the theoretical variety. Theoretical knowledge then enables one to acquire practical abilities more quickly than one could otherwise, and feeds back to create more theoretical knowledge that can in turn be refined and passed on to the next generation. It is true that the practical manifestation has often gone awry, but I believe the reason for such activities is sound.

[Sasaki doesn't seem to be ruffled at all.] I apologize, but I have never met any kings before.

In that case, I had better start studying. But I am afraid the current existential issues facing me are occupying my attention in spite of my attempts to ignore them and watch some pleasantly numbing television.

Ah, yes, I agree entirely. The entire evolutionary process of living organisms has been one which has been focused on the optimization of survival. However, humans have entered a phase where the evolutionary goal is based on the accumulation of knowledge, and therefore we should be allowed to, ideally, minimize our time commitment to activities that merely support survival of the organism.

I apologize, though, I don't believe I have introduced myself. Please, call me Sasaki.
