Summary:
A/N: Very largely inspired by John Mayer's "
Dreaming With a Broken Heart"
Shindong knew from the moment he saw her that she was the girl of his dreams. Everything about her was so perfect: the way she bought his favorite meal from his favorite little café, the way she was beautiful with a little bit of meat on her bones unlike everyone else, and the way she smiled at him- not at Super Junior’s Shindong, but at him: the guy across the street wearing the shirt with a weird stain on it that Donghae and Eunhyuk swore they knew nothing about. It was a casual smile, like the ones people in America gave strangers as they passed on the street, but he couldn’t get it out of his mind even as she disappeared into the crowd around her. He didn’t even care about Heechul’s snide remark of “You look like a fucking idiot staring at nothing like that. Stop making me look bad.”
He’d dreamt about her that night too. In his dream, Shindong had mulled up the courage to walk over and say hi to her, and he instantly fell in love with the little giggle she let out while covering her mouth with a delicate hand. In his dream, she’d given him a name that he didn’t remember when he opened his eyes and a promise that they would see each other soon.
Ever since then he started looking for her face in the crowds of fans- not the ones swooning over Kyuhyun’s angelic voice or Heechul’s ability to win everyone over by doing nothing, but the one who would only have eyes for him. In his dreams, she was always there and he would always sing his parts extra loud, just for her.
It went on for weeks, and yet no one noticed anything out of the ordinary aside from a stray comment about how he’d been sleeping a lot lately and it was doing wonders for his skin. Only Donghae ever raised a question about it when Shindong was in the middle of telling them about a girl he’d spent hours with in the park nearby, talking about nothing and everything at the same time.
(“But Hyung, wasn’t Shindong asleep in your room all day yesterday?”
The leader didn’t answer. He only shrugged and turned the page of his magazine to look at the latest fall fashions.)
After a few days of thinking about Donghae’s question though, Leeteuk began to get suspicious -concerned even- because that’s just who he was and no one had ever actually seen this girl that Shindong raved so much about. Come to think of it, they never heard her name either. She was just a big gray blur to the rest of them, but they had never seen Shindong happier than when he spoke about the girl who lit up his world and always wanted to visit him at night.
The real concern began when she actually did.
Shindong was practically glowing the morning he claimed that she’d slept with him. No- just literally slept with him- but he couldn’t have possibly smiled more about anything. He told them all about how beautiful she looked in his arms and how he understood why she was already gone when he opened his eyes. She was his angel, he’d said, his perfect little angel and he would do anything for her.
Ryeowook really didn’t have the heart to point out that Shindong had slept longer than all of them and that nobody had entered or left the apartment at all that night. He may have just smiled and listened to his hyung’s words while Shindong went into detail about the way her hair tickled his nose, but as soon as the elder man had gone off to tell Sungmin, Ryeowook took action.
(“This girl isn’t real Hyung.”
“I know.”
“What? Why haven’t you said anything to him??”
“Don’t you think Donghee deserves to be happy again?”)
And so they all continued to play along with Leeteuk’s little game; never promoting Shindong’s stories, but never denying his claims either. Only Ryeowook dropped subtle hints every now and then, and it was only spoken about to their most trusted hyung or dongsaeng. So long as the wild tales didn’t leave the dorm, Leeteuk would turn the other cheek to Shindong dozing off during every break or sleeping away their travel time, and explain it away by telling management that he didn’t sleep well at night anymore. No one questioned it. Management just handed him a small bottle of pills that he wasn’t actually going to take and sent him on his way.
It wasn’t until Sungmin overheard one of Hangeng’s conversations with Siwon that anybody really tried to step in. After only a few short sentences, Sungmin had had enough.
(“He told me they were going to be together forever. I’m really worried about him Siwon.”
“I know, but Leeteuk-hyung said to let him be.”
Sungmin snapped. “What the hell is wrong with you people? How can we just sit back and watch him destroy himself like this?!”
Neither man said anything as they watched silent trails make their way down Sungmin’s cheeks.)
It was too late when anybody actually tried to do something; Shindong was already too far gone. His latest story had been that she mentioned him not spending enough time with her, and that he wanted to do something special to make up for her sadness. No one said a word until he came home that evening with a bouquet of roses in his hand and headed off to his room. He’d only just opened the door when Kyuhyun decided to end it once and for all.
(“You just woke up a few hours ago Hyung.”
“I know.”
“What are the roses for?”
Shindong poked his dongsaeng in the ribs. “What do you think they’re for? I thought you were supposed to be the smart one around here Kyuhyun-ah.”
The younger blinked slowly. “It won’t bring her back Hyung,” he whispered in vain.
Shindong just smiled. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” and closed the door behind him.)
BREAKING NEWS: Only 3 months after the tragic accident that killed his fiancé, popular idol group Super Junior’s Shin Donghee was found dead in the group’s dorm late last night by fellow members. Emergency medical staff rushed to the scene, but the idol was already lost. An empty bottle of sleeping medication found by Donghee’s bedside led the medical team to believe the cause of death to be suicide…
Grief-stricken members made no comment about the incident…
Only clue to what may have prompted the suicide was a bouquet of roses clutched in the idol’s hands when the body was discovered…
