Thanks to Ashbet for passing it along.

Theodora Goss on the true lesson of Bluebeard, and living as a woman.

When I teach my class on fairy tales, I ask students about the moral of “Bluebeard.” Charles Perrault gives us a moral, clearly marked “moral,” at the end of the tale: “Curiosity, in spite of its appeal ( Read more... )

You are welcome <3

(There is a well-intentioned guy, because of COURSE it's a guy, arguing with me on G+ about how this dangerously encourages the idea that women should be hypervigilant about stranger rape, because most rapes aren't by strangers. And I want to shake him and say "Did you miss the entire *point* of Bluebeard??!? The murderer may already be inside your home, or you in his. But we can't discount the possibility of street violence, which is *why we have to calculate our responses when approached by a stranger,* FFS -- these things aren't mutually exclusive!!)

Bluebeard's... wife. How does he... how is... that ... what...

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?

And also, he can go shove the idea that it's dangerous for women to be hypervigilant about sexual assault by strangers. Just because the sickening truth is that more people we trust are the ones to hurt us doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of "strangers" that want to violate us in some way. How much groping and inappropriate, unwanted sexual advances are happening at conventions? A LOT. How much catcalling and dangerous "hitting on" at bus stops and bars and parties full of strangers? A LOT.

So he can shove that shit. We do still have to be hypervigilant and he obviously didn't read the fucking part of the article where she said HE DOESN'T GET TO DECIDE what levels of fear are "appropriate" for us. He's not the one that suffers. Or gets told he should have been more vigilant. Maybe he shouldn't have been waiting for that bus at that time of night where the creeper waits to "innocently" try their best assault "pick up" moves, why ( ... )
