Wino Wednesdays - #3, 4, and 5

Jun 04, 2006 16:34

A lot of wine has been consumed over the past few weeks, and not a lot of writing has been done. Let me stop with all the shrubbery and tell you what I liked and didn't like.

Remy-Pannier Anjou White (France)
7$/gl. - 25$/btl.
Very light - looks like regina water, only slightly clearer. No legs, very light in body. A faint smell of your grandmother's garden after a light rain, without all the cat shit and annoying kids next door. Mild pear flavour (hence Anjou), with a fairly earthy, soft length. This is actually a great wine for the price. I think it could pair well with a strong cheese - but I think that about everything.

Remy-Pannier Muscadet de Sevre et Maive (France)
7$/gl. - 25$/btl.
Very light again. almost no legs. Very mild, nutty taste with wild musk. I can't pin this taste, slightly earthy again but not as much as the Anjou. It's even a little buttery. I suppose it's flavour is "complex" but what the shit do I know? It could be the fajitas I had for dinner. For the price, again, it's good. Anjou is better though.

Pouilly-Fume Henry Bourgeois (France)
10$/gl. - 37$/btl.
Finally, some legs! Appley smell, but as I often react to apple - the vision of urine. Slightly smokey flavour, with some grapefruit in the length. Kinda hot... oh, a little hickery? Spicey, smokey, backwoods-ish kinda wine. It's different - think Glennlivet's grape tree. It's a good wine, but not at the price they sell it at here at the restaurant.

Rotchschild Sauvignon Blanc (France)
7$/gl. - 26$/btl.
Slightly tannic. Ew. This is kinda sour. It really latches onto the sour buds. It's hot, it's acidic, it's sour, it's overpriced. That's it. I've nothing more to say about this wine. I'm gonna pound it. Brutal end to what was otherwise a flawless night.

Riesling Kabinett Piesporter Goldtropfchen (Germany, naturally)
10$/gl. - 37$/btl.
Ooooh, scrumptious! A vibrant, citrusy little vixen that's not annoying. She's sultry, playful, perhaps slightly promiscuous, but she'll never let you know for sure. She's light but still has a killer body. I tried to check out her legs, but was only able to peak a glimpse. Her perfume smells of light pears and flowers... I wish to take her home for further ravishings!

Orvietto Classico Rufino (Italy)
8$/gl. - 30$/btl.
She was sweet when I first approached, smell of cherries surprised me given how blond and fair she was; but she quickly showed her acidic side, veering her head with a sharp toungue. She's kind of bitter at me, and I'm really not sure why... the longer she talks, the more I find myself wishing I had gone home with Ms. Piesporter. Oh well, at least orvietto wore a miniskirt and gave me an eyeful of those luscious legs.

Soave Classico (Italy)
7$/gl. - 28$/btl.
What is this - fucking vodka?! Holy shit... ABORT MISSION!

Robert's Rock Chenin Blanc / Chardonnay (South Africa)
6$/gl. - 25$/btl.
Who ate asparagus and pissed in my glass?! Honest to god, this is hands down the smelliest wine I've ever had. Seriously - where's Ashton? This is a "Surprise! You're 40!" gag gift. Worst after taste I've ever experienced. Actually worse than the Soave...

There were actually 3 more that we tried, but we didn't have our books. I wasn't impressed with any of them, to be honest. Disappointingly, 1 of the 3 was the Yamhill Pinot Gris which is all the rage right now, but I honestly don't find it that great. Perhaps that's the final, definitive proof that I just ain't a fresh-white kinda guy. I'll have the names and countries of those 3 wines for you after our next tasting - and that'll be that for the fresh-caucassions! This week we (finally) start on the medium whites! Praise d' Lo'd!
