exoxendo, who rocks. :D
Jinu walked into the house virtually oozing with smugness, with his golf bag slung over his shoulder and the same clothes he'd been wearing when he'd left the previous morning. "Hi, mom," he said brightly as he propped his bag against the nearest wall, then headed straight for the kitchen. "Man, I'm starving. Did you have lunch already?"
"Yes, I did." She put down her book and stood up to follow him, intrigued. He'd been moping for a couple of weeks (which was understandable, after his divorce) and had only gone out after she'd nagged him into it and more or less shoved him out the door. She was happy to spend time with him, of course, but it had been heartbreaking to see him so depressed. Once it had become obvious that he wasn't coming back for the night, she had expected to deal with a hungover mess in the morning, but it seemed like he was suddenly back to his old self. "What would you like to eat?"
The question was unnecessary, though, because he was already in the process of grabbing most of the leftovers from the fridge with the obvious intention of turning them into an enormous sandwich. "I can feed myself, you know," he said airily, then smiled up at her. "Don't stop reading on my account."
She watched as he meticulously spread mustard on a piece of bread, the smile lingering on his face. He looked exactly like he used to as a child when he was just dying to tell her all about his latest shenanigans. He hadn't changed much, come to think of it, and she knew it wouldn't take more than a nudge in the right direction to hear more details than she really cared to. "Did you meet someone?" she tried.
"Yeah," he replied, breaking into a grin, and piled chicken onto the bread.
"Well? Is it a boy or a girl?" It was impossible to know with him. She'd been delighted by the idea of having grandchildren when he'd started dating Junie, but at this point, she'd be happy with whatever made him happy.
"Boy."
He was obviously enjoying the suspense. That made her even more curious, despite herself. "Is he good-looking, at least?" she asked playfully.
"Oh, I dunno. D'you think Justin Timberlake's good-looking?" He sounded incredibly nonchalant, but he looked at her sideways as he cut his sandwich and she could see the giddiness bubbling under the surface.
"... The singer?"
He blinked and turned to look straight at her. "Nnnno, the president of Sudan. Of course, the singer," he said impatiently.
She laughed. He'd probably been dying to brag about it to someone. "Well, I wouldn't mind having him as a son-in-law."
"Working on it," he replied, grinning again. She tried to imagine having Justin Timberlake over for dinner and shook her head to herself amusedly, wondering just how boring her life would be if her son wasn't around. As proud as she was of his success in Korea, she had to admit she was glad he'd found a good reason to stay in America for a while.
