A/N: Just a little idea I had. Un-betaed. For the sake of this story, Peter has gotten back his original empathic ability. Inspired by
commen_sense's fic Never Alone.

It would be so easy.

As easily as Sylar had killed his brother, Peter could kill Sylar.

The reason for that, and the problem with that, was that right now, Sylar was Nathan.

Peter had kissed him, held him, slept next to him for months. Everyone had known but him.

Peter bit hard into his knuckles, to keep from crying, to keep from screaming. He bit down so hard that they bled, and then healed. His brother was dead. Nathan was dead.

Yet he was lying right there.

How could they have done this? His mother. Matt Parkman. Noah Bennet. They had all lied to him, told him Sylar was dead. But it was all a lie. Nathan had died.

Peter reached out tentatively, until his fingers just brushed Nathan's throat, until he could feel his pulse running under his fingers.

You're not Nathan.

Or was he?

With Sylar in his brother's body, would his healing ability work? If Peter killed him right now, would he come back to life?

Or would Nathan Petrelli die again?

Peter's mind raced; he felt sick, numb and confused. I have to do this. It's not right.

The real Nathan would want him to do this. He was sure of that much, at least.

So why couldn't he? Peter's vision blurred as he slipped back into the bed he had shared with this person who was and was not his brother. His body shook silently as he forced himself not to cry.

Peter wrapped his arms around Nathan and held him tightly. How could he be gone when he was right here? No one really had to know, did they? That was what his mother had rationalized when she and Bennet had directed Parkman to rewrite Sylar's memory, wasn't it?

What if Sylar, convinced he was Nathan, still had his abilities? Then Nathan would never die. Just like Peter himself. They would live forever. Both of them. He may have lost the real Nathan, but he would never lose this Nathan.

Peter was suddenly sickened at even entertaining this thought. This would never be Nathan. This was Sylar. Sylar had murdered his brother, and for that he had to die. No matter how much it hurt Peter to do it.

Peter rested his head on Nathan's shoulder, hugged him hard, and whispered, "I'm sorry. It's not right."

When it was done, Peter gave up holding back the tears. He felt something inside him break. He cried until he couldn't breathe, couldn't see, couldn't even feel anything anymore. Until everything went completely black.

When Peter awoke, he had no idea how much time had passed, but Nathan's body was still warm. Peter started to pull away when he felt Nathan's breath on his cheek.

Had Peter just dreamt all that? No. It really happened. Nathan had come back, unaware that his brother had just tried to kill him.

Nathan would live forever. Just like Peter himself.

It would not be so easy after all.
