III. Salvage

Junsu woke from an uneasy sleep with the tear streaks still visible on his cheeks. Rubbing his face with a towel, he stared into the bathroom mirror. Red-rimmed eyes, slightly swollen lips, pink marks all over his neck … How was he going to explain all this to Yoochun without getting him involved? Junsu knew Yoochun’s temper too well; he would blow his top and demand to know who the bastard was.

Clearing his throat, he realised it was sore and his voice came out raspy and hoarse. It was not very obvious, but Yoochun would be able to discover it easily. Junsu closed his eyes, trying to think of a perfect solution, but his mind wandered back to the events of the past night. Jaejoong had forced himself on him while ordering him to scream his name over and over again, until his throat was raw and he was shuddering from the sudden deposit of cold fluid within his body. Just thinking about how the other man had touched him, and kissed him made him extremely disgusted at himself.

“Su?” Junsu jumped as Yoochun opened the door to poke his head inside.

“Um …” Junsu tried to hide the red marks while his eyes darted to and fro nervously. “Chunnie …”

What he didn’t expect was for Yoochun to start laughing cheerfully.

“My poor Su … we had a rough night, didn’t we?” Stroking the side of Junsu’s cheeks, Yoochun pressed his lips to Junsu’s briefly. “I’ll go and make breakfast for you.”

Junsu felt as though he was going to burst. “Thank you, Chunnie.”

After Yoochun left the room humming merrily, Junsu slid down the wall helplessly, burying his head in his knees. Tears flowed down his cheeks as he sobbed silently. What was he going to do now?

Yoochun,

Going out for a little while, be back soon, don’t look for me.

Love,

Junsu

Yoochun picked up the pink note stuck to the tabletop where they had their meals. Perplexed, he examined the note carefully, trying to find any trace or clue of what had caused Junsu’s sudden disappearance. It was already highly mystifying that Junsu had addressed him as ‘Yoochun’ in the note instead of ‘Chunnie’, and signed off with ‘Junsu’ instead of ‘Susu’. But the most puzzling thing was the abnormality in Junsu’s tone. Something was definitely not right; Yoochun thought, ominous trepidation and anxiety brewing in his heart, but what?

He had to get down to the bottom of the mystery when Junsu came back.

Everything felt so surreal to him, the green pricking at his eyes. The trees swaying gently in the breeze, the trimmed grass firmly embedded in the ground, the edge of the crisscrossed plastic seat, the matching shirts of the family and their picnic mat … Junsu shut his aching eyes and tucked his head between his raised knees, scrunching up onto a tight ball on the park bench.

“Hey, there.” A voice piped up from beside him. Junsu jumped with a little yelp before lifting his head to face the newcomer. Thank goodness he was wearing a striped cream shirt with a pair of yellow-brown bermudas. Junsu didn’t think he could stand seeing anymore green.

“What’s up? You look lonely. And sad.” Ignoring the fact that Junsu was uncomfortable in his presence, the tall man scooted over and seated himself right next to him, thighs touching.

“R-Really?” Junsu tried not to stutter. The other man raised an eyebrow, before holding out his large hand to him. “Oh, I nearly forgot. Polite greetings first. I’m Shim Changmin.”

Hesitating, Junsu took his hand, shook it cordially, and prepared to let go, but Changmin had a firm grip on him. Alarmed, Junsu looked up to see a contrasting black flash across Changmin’s light-brown irises and realised with a shock that his thin lips had twisted into a deep, wide leer only similar to that of one person he had ever seen in his life.

Kim Jaejoong.

Instinctively, Junsu flung Changmin’s hand away and took a few steps backwards. “I - I - I’ve got to go.”

Turning, Junsu began to run homewards as fast as he could. This was a warning, and he knew it. Jaejoong was unhappy with him, but this time … this time … Jaejoong had no more patience left to wait for him.

Glancing at his watch, Junsu let out a choked sob as he realised how long he had been out, leaving Yoochun alone at home. No, please, not Yoochun, please! Tears fell from the corners of his eyes and he brushed them away forcefully with the back of his hand.

Yoochun-ah, wait for me.
