I think that was always supposed to be the mark of a true "princess"-despite all the odds against them, they are always nice (and normal) people. Like Tarzan quickly learning perfect English and manners in the jungle, their upbringing has nothing to do with their personality; they got everything right at birth and just needed the proper environment to show it.
