Legalizing Pot in CA? Maybe.

It's unlikely, and not how I would have written the bill, but if passed it's a step in the right direction.  If I had an hour with The President, or some really influential legislators, I would propose that the nation legalize marijuana, and explain to them how it could work:

I think it's rather silly for pot to be illegal. I'm all for personal responsibility and libertarianish and stuff. You cover most of the reasons- although I will say Ixnay on using weed intentionally. Oh, it does work, the terribly overgrazed farm land my family bought to restore and grow trees on was RAPIDLY overtaken by the wild version of the stuff, and it is quite good for the soil. But imagine, if you will, acres of plants higher than your head, with taproots like dandelions and cutting them down, well, it's like cutting through rope. There is a reason it's called Weed. (Sorry, flashbacks of several summers spent hacking through the 'jungle' with my trusty machete).

I also wanted to respond to :

"They said it about homosexuality, porn, liquor, and the freaking waltz. They're all legal today, and so far last I checked not everyone is a gay alcoholic pornographer with a ballroom dance fetish. "

1) Actually, (and I was just reading up on this topic last night but am a bit incoherent from being at work n>30hrs again so haven't written it up properly) It is STILL ILLEGAL TO DISTILL ALCOHOL FOR DRINKING!!!! I didn't know that, and I'm not really surprised, but WTF??? There are specific exemptions for science (thank goodness) and fuel production, but to distill alcohol to drink in this country you have to be a company and jump through a zillion hoops and get a federal license. Bwa??? I'm still trying to figure out if this applies to just steam distillation or if freeze distillation is illegal, too.
